The Carnivore Diet in the News

The Carnivore Diet is a dietary fad that excludes all plant foods – grains, fruit, vegetables. Relying solely on beef, chicken, pork, game meats, organ meats, fish, eggs, low lactose dairy products like hard cheese and cream for nourishment. Proponents of the diet frequently cite highly subjective benefits like weight loss, improved mental clarity, and stable energy levels.

This restrictive diet comes with significant drawbacks. One major concern is the lack of beneficial nutrients only found in plants, such as fiber, vitamins C and E, antioxidants, and phytochemicals crucial for overall health and disease prevention. Excessive consumption of red meat and saturated fats is an established risk factor for development of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Overall, while short-term benefits may be observed by some adherents, the long-term health implications and nutritional deficiencies associated with a carnivore dietary pattern raise a red flag for me.

Highly restrictive diets, in general, are not advisable due to the potential for nutrient deficiencies, limited food choices leading to boredom and decreased enjoyment of meals, and the risk of developing disordered eating patterns. The overwhelming scientific evidence indicates that optimal health is achieved through a diverse and balanced, plant dominant diet that includes a wide array of nutrient-rich, foods.
